The International Four Day Marches Nijmegen (or Vierdaagse) is the largest marching event in the world. It is organised every year in Nijmegen in mid-July as a means of promoting sport and exercise. Participants walk 30, 40 or 50 kilometers daily, and, on completion, receive a royally approved medal (Vierdaagsekruis). The participants are mostly civilians, but there are also thousands of military participants representing many countries from around the world!
Standard categories:
• 30 km x 4 days
• 40 km x 4 days
• 50 km x 4 days
Military category:
• 40 km x 4 days - Wearing uniform + at least 10 kg backpack (+ water, etc.)
You have to be crazy to take part in the first place... and even more crazy to keep coming back to do it again and again, year after year!
Only those who have completed the Nijmegen Marches (even if it was a long time ago) truly understand the comradeship and strange bond that exists between all marchers forever....and we all have one thing in common that binds us together....that we're all insane!
It isnt the walking over huge distances we enjoy or the aches and pain we put our bodies through but what goes along with it; The friendly fun party atmosphere and the sense of belonging at this unique European, International event hosted & organised by the Dutch (KNBLO).
This Facebook Page or "Society" is also open to ALL who have completed or have been to the Nijmegen Marches. It is also open to those who are training for the marches or have been associated with Nijmegen wether awarded a medal or not.
Finally, don't Forget the little blue (British Embassy Club) book everyone, (well... mostly marchers from the British Military Contingent) signs each year which is kept behind the bar in The Shamrock! (Our Society's Headquarters in Nijmegen during the Vierdaagse).
